Ladies, when was the last time you held your sword? When was the last time you pulled it from its sheathed and confidently held it out in front of you? Can you picture it? Let me help you…
In Judges 6:12, an angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and says, “The LORD is with you mighty warrior.” Gideon does not reply with, why would you call me that. He replies, “But sir, if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all the wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?” Gideon and his people are being oppressed by the Midianites but Gideon REMEMBERS THE LORD. And there lies his strength. “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of the Midians hand. Am I not sending you?”
Remembering the LORD makes you a mighty warrior.
What is truth? Truth is the Word of God. It is our weapon against the liar. Ephesians 6:17 says, “Take the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.” And what does a sword do? It severs doesn’t it. That’s its soul purpose, to sever.
So I ask you, how sharp are your sword, ladies? A dull knife makes cutting very hard. Ever try to cut with a dull knife? It’s miserable. It’s not very effective. But a sharp knife, that knife gets respect doesn’t it. We store it differently. We warn the kids to be careful. We understand its power to slice through the hard and difficult. I find it completely brilliant that God calls the Word of the Lord a sword. He is telling us to take hold of it. He calls us to take an active roll doesn’t He? He wants us to confidently hold our swords. Psalm 45:3 says, “Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one.” Know what “gird” means??? To prepare oneself for action (is anyone getting excited?).
The Word of God is POWERFUL! How powerful? Jesus used it. Matthew 4:1-11 tells the story of Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus is weak and tired and hungry and here comes the devil (one of the very few times he ever shows up in scripture). We’re thinking, “Hey, there’s gonna be a fight!” Like my policeman husband would say, “Jesus should choke the devil out!” But no. The devil distorts the Word of God because he lies and Jesus pulls out His sword. Three times He tells the devil, “It is written…”.
The powerful Word of God sets the devil straight and he flees. The devil flees! Why? Because he cannot stand up to truth. He runs from it. He does not like you holding your sword because it exposes him and he loses power in our lives. Pull your sword and make him flee.
Psalm 149-6 says, “May the praise of God be in their mouth and a double-edge sword in their hands.” Yes – know the Word of God. Speak it. Take hold of it. Isaiah 49:2 says “He made my mouth like a sharpened sword…” And in Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edge sword.
Did you catch that??? Sharper than “any”!
Do you know how Jesus destroys the devil in Revelations 19? He speaks it. Powerful! That is powerful stuff.
I pray we all continue to pour into the Word of God. It teaches us to confidently grab our swords at all times. Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one.
