“Drug use is on the rise in this country and 23.5 million Americans are addicted to alcohol and drugs. That’s approximately one in every 10 Americans over the age of 12 – roughly equal to the entire population of Texas, but only 11 percent of those with an addiction receive treatment. It is staggering and unacceptable that so many Americans are living with an untreated chronic disease and cannot access treatment.” – Dr. Kima Joy Taylor, director of the Closing the Addiction Treatment Gap Initiative, a division of the Substance and Mental Health Services Administration. 2014.
In February 2014, Harbor Rock Recovery opened a residence for men who are learning to live in freedom from their addictions by the power of Jesus Christ. According to the statistics, it was none too soon.
At the HRR launch, my husband (Pastor Dan Bradford) stated that over the last 8 years not a week has gone by that he hasn’t received a call related to addiction to drugs or alcohol. Occasionally, someone reaches out on their own behalf, however, most often it is a concerned spouse, parent, friend, or even pastor calling needing help to navigate their loved one through intervention, detox, or sober living.
Over the years, many people would bring their friends who were struggling with addiction to Recovery With Jesus Bible Study with the intent to plug them into a like-minded faith community. Often, those people would continue attending the study because, “It was the most applicable and authentic Bible Study and accountability group they had experienced.”
Makes one think.
What if you felt safe confessing your darkest sin? What if the response, rather than uncomfortable silence, was applause at the courage it took to say it out loud? What if there were a standing ovation because, by that confession, you no longer need be chained to that sin because the first step to freedom had be taken?
Imagine a community where you aren’t judged because of your sin-of-choice and the focus is on the process of being made new.
We might be able to learn a thing or two from the recovery community.
In the South Bay alone, there are over 1000 secular 12 step meetings each week with only a few Christian Celebrate Recovery groups that offer a Biblical response to this struggle.
Harbor Rock Recovery is more than a men’s sober living residence. It is an organization on the front lines of the battle for living in freedom through Christ. Admitting the answer is in the person of Jesus Christ, we are committed to community Bible Studies. Planning for lives lived free from addiction, we are committed to resident discipleship, education, vocational training, and outreach. Acknowledging that the effects of addiction are widespread, we are committed to educating and discipling families and friends who love someone with this disease. Recognizing this battle needs soldiers, we are committed to educating the community on addiction prevention and recovery. Knowing the need is great, we are committed to opening a sober living home for women in the South Bay.
The doors are open. More will be opening soon.
