I stood on top of the playground in front of the slide, knowing what to do but wondering how to execute it. Then it seemed like in one brief moment, time stood still and the Lord spoke directly to me.
I was playing freeze tag with my Royal Family Kid’s Club mentee, fellow mentors, and their mentees. In that particular moment, I observed a mentor “freezing” a mentee on the ground below me. I heard the mentee’s call for help, but I hesitated. I knew she needed someone to “unfreeze” her. I saw where she was. But there was one slight problem: between me and her stood the mentor who was “It”. I thought and re-thought if I would be able to zip down the slide and unfreeze the mentee without getting frozen. Then, I determined to unfreeze her even if it I might get frozen in the process. But before I carried out the action, someone else unfroze her first. I was too late and I was strangely disappointed.
Through this situation, God spoke to my heart: “ Is this the very same way we stand up for justice?” Many of us know about the hundreds of foster children out there who need to be unfrozen. Many of us have probably heard their cries. Many of us have seen their pictures. Yet, between us and the carrying out of justice for these children, stands “It” who seeks to thwart our attempts for rescue.
Because of this, most of us prefer to do what I did – just stand by watching. We may feel hopeless or useless or unequipped, but whatever our excuse, there is no reason why we should hold back from completing the obvious will of the Lord.
Since Jesus Christ is for justice, we should be too. It doesn’t matter that a monster of an enemy called “It” (or more precisely known as the devil) blocks our way. It’s not important what obstacles stand in our path. It doesn’t make a difference that others around us may or may not follow suit. And it’s not even relevant that there’s a possibility we will be tagged in the process. Focus on the Lord and the one “frozen” He has placed in front of you. If we don’t follow God’s nudging to whiz down the slide and unfreeze those around us, someone else will do it first and we will be disappointed.
In order for justice to be brought about in our community – in our world – it is necessary for the entire Body of Christ to work together to bring justice where justice is needed. Be it foster kids, the unborn, sex trafficked, or orphans, the reality of the matter is that not merely tens, not simply hundreds, not only thousands, but millions around the globe are frozen and are waiting for a rescuer!
Though the injustices occurring here on earth seem like a problem too big for us to solve, a situation far outside of our control, an issue impossible to end – remember that our God is mighty and strong in power. He is the One who will back us up one hundred percent of the way. When we bounce down the slide – regardless of the “Its” that tower before us – we can be confident that God is sliding right here with us, in us, and through us, and it is He who will enable us to be an “Unfreezer” in this generation all to His glory!
