I feel like I have been waiting most of my life. Waiting for God to come through and deliver me from one thing or another. For the past two years, I have been waiting for God to heal me of an illness, one that affects my day to day living on every area. I see the joy of overcoming, of making it through, but I’m not there yet. I’m standing on the precipice, looking around at all the beautiful land surrounding me, but I don’t know how to travel to these other places.
As January begins, is there something you are waiting for? A job found, a relationship mended, an illness healed?
What do you do when you’re just waiting? What do you do when you’re standing around, hoping the yellow brick road will appear so you know what to follow, where to go?
Sooner or later, and just right on time, God will work out the thing we have been waiting for. But what to do until then?
Psalm 37:3-4 has some advice from David that helps when it comes to the topic of waiting:
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
There’s such a thing as waiting well. If you’re waiting, you might as well do it well. First off, trust in the Lord. We could almost just end here. God is worth our trust. God is our most trustworthy provider, ally, and friend. God knows exactly where I’m headed from and exactly where I’m headed to. I may not know but He holds the plans for my life in the palm of His hands and He is good.
Next: do good. Waiting is not just a passive act. There are things to be done during times of waiting. In a way, we are all on a sinking boat and if all I can do is share my snacks and hold somebody else’s hand, then that is precisely the thing to do.
Dwelling in the land is staying within the parameters of life God has given me. It is staying under the umbrella of God’s love, God’s provision, and God’s ordinance. It is tending my crops, building relationships with my fellow farmers, and allowing God to do whatever he wants to do right where I am at.
Delight yourself in the Lord. Give your entire being wholehearted to Him and rejoice in having given yourself to Him. You can’t be in a better place. As you walk with Him, and as your heart becomes more molded to Him, you will see the desires of your heart becoming reality.
Times of waiting are the perfect time to sink deeper into God, into discovering more of who He is and how He satisfies. It is the best time to remember that the thing we truly long for is not God’s blessing, God’s provision, or God’s deliverance, but God himself.
What are you waiting for this year?
